Hyland Equipment Co of East Greenwich, RI has developed a Robotic Jet Engine Cleaner. This Jet Engine Cleaner was developed and designed to clean the Turbine Blades in each jet engine. It was specifically designed to clean the newly manufactured jet engine turbines prior to installation, however it can also be used to clean the turbine blades during a scheduled Preventative Maintenance Service or major engine rebuild.
The Cleaning Process
The process starts with the robotic arm picking up a Turbine Blade that is placed in the cleaning unit holding bay by the machines operator. The robotic arm picks up the turbine blade and moves it into the enclosed cleaning bay of the machine. The High Pressure Nozzles in the cleaning bay blasts and flushes the Cooling Ports of the trailing edge of the turbine blade with hi pressure hot water. After the trailing edges cooling
ports have been cleaned the robotic arm automatically turns and reverses the turbine blade so that the Root Section of the blade can then be cleaned by the high pressure blast of hot water. Cleaning the Root Section also forces water back up through the Cooling Ports to ensure that all ports of the turbine blade have been thoroughly cleaned.
After this has been completed the water automatically shuts off. High Pressure Air is then blasted through all of the internal ports of the turbine blade to evacuate all water
and remaining moisture within the turbine blade. Upon completion of the high pressure air blast, the robotic arm then moves the turbine blade to the drying rack in the cleaning unit. Once placed in the drying rack, high pressure air knives then blast the external
surface of the turbine blade to complete the drying process. The robotic arm then picks up the next turbine blade to repeat the cleaning process. The cleaned and dried turbine blade is then removed from the drying rack by the machines operator.
All of the water that is used in this cleaning process is automatically filtered and recycled to be re-used to ensure continuous use. This helps save on excessive water usage and grey water disposal fees.
